They hadn’t left Carl a chrono, so he just assumed by the fullness of his bladder that they’d left him alone, shackled to that interview table with his cold coffee tantalizing from just out of reach for about eighteen hours by now.

At long last, the door opened.

In walked a woman not much older than him, by the look of her—though core-world cosmo could play tricks. Simple heels clacked. Her gray skirt suit looked off-the-rack. She had her hair back in a no-nonsense ponytail. Her first action was to set her briefcase on the table and address the officers guarding the door. “Uncuff my client.”

The officers complied, and Carl’s first act, after rubbing sore wrists, was to take a sip of cold, stale coffee that hadn’t been any good fresh and warm. The lawyer didn’t say another word until the doors closed.

“Mr. Heston, my name is Moira Chandler with the Henderson City Public Defender’s Office. I’ll be handling your case.”

Carl pointed up toward the ceiling corner where a black glint indicated a tiny camera.

“Legally, they can’t listen or record us in any way. If they do, and we get proof, your case will be dismissed, and you’ll have a civil rights case to file in return. So, let’s get started.”

“Do you even know the exact charge?”

Moira pulled out a pair of datagoggles, and he could tell from the weird reverse images that they were scrambling the view from his side. “They’re calling it grand theft. A briefcase was reported missing from a hover parked at the Squiddie’s Casino garage on November 27 of this year. The owner reported the theft at 9:27 that evening after exiting the casino where he had spent the day playing poker and various table games.

“Henderson PD pulled civilian footage of what they believe to be that case being loaded into a ’39 Halley Asteroidrunner. Dispatch logs from the valet station place you in the vicinity at that time.”

“So, how we play this? I’m assuming they’ve got a warrant for my apartment by now, looking for a case they’re not going to find. It’d be a fishing expedition, since their story assumes I passed it off, not that I was supposedly on the receiving end. So, I’ll get home, my place will be a wreck, and they’ll somehow still stick to their story that I know a guy who knows a guy who has that case or its contents, and they’re willing to cut me a deal only if I name names. That sound about right?”

“For a man with a clean record, that’s remarkably concise.” A garbled mess flashed over the lenses, only really noticeable if one was looking straight into her eyes, which Carl was. “Look, I see you were on Ursa Epsilon. Lot of records lost there. If you had priors that didn’t roll up to the ARGO computer system, it might help to let me know. I can’t be compelled to reveal that information, but it might aid me in understanding your side of this situation.
